Michael and I took the cushions off the couch to clean and vacuum…we found this tiny person. I have no idea when this person moved into the couch but they now reside on the book case. Lol.

It almost looks like Milo from Atlantis.

pokemon scorned for perpetuating ‘disableism’

i have no hope left for the world

So, my family runs a small vacation/permanent rental company in a coastal town.  Every summer when business booms, we ALWAYS get a few of the same kind of people.  Very loud and very angry people.  These are the people who always have to be  upset about something.  There could be nothing wrong; nice and sunny outside, the beach isn’t too crowded, they’ve rented a beautiful house, etc.  But not only will they find something to be upset about, they will actively SEARCH for it! We’ve had renters who have complained that sky lights were letting in too much light, that the weather wasn’t decent, and some have moved around all of the furniture looking for dust.  People like that just can’t be content unless they have something to be upset about. That is what this post reminded me of.  Now, I don’t know if the person who wrote the pokemon post is like that, but it is representative of many (fortunately not all) of the people here on Tumblr.

Far be it from me to say this about ‘social justice’ especially on Tumblr with all of this transable and transethnic shit going around…Okay, first, I have to say that this is crazy (sorry for my misuse of the word ‘crazy’ because actual crazy people are offended). Now…I think the reason people do absurd things like this is because they 1. Have nothing else to do and 2. Want to help.

In this day and age, it’s popular to be different (read: ‘oppressed’) because it makes you unique, special, someone that has value. No one wants to read the same book. It’s the same reason why that whole ‘emo’ thing was so big back in 2006-2008; people thought it made them different. Being bland is nothing to strive for, people recognize that, so they look for ways to be different. And may it be good or bad, there is something about social justice that makes it the zeitgeist of this day and age.

Look to the LGBTQ* movement-why do you think that B, Q, and little star (that brings us to pansexual, asexual, demisexual, etc) are there? If you don’t know, it’s partially because relatively straight people want to be included and it’s proven that being an ally is not enough. You’re not taken seriously as a straight cisgender person trying to help the LGBTQ* movement. Why? Because you don’t understand. However, if you say you’re pansexual, it’s much easier to be taken seriously. Your opinion matters because you understand. The second reason is because people are able to fully express theirself in quite a few terms (aromantic, pansexual FTM-etc). In a way…it’s good in a way, it’s not.

Right now, face it, it’s popular to be a social justice crusader: I know this from my high school experiences…Standing up for racial injustices, makes you a hero. Acting offended when someone says ‘faggot’ makes you a saint. You’re different, you go against the grain, against society and all of its petty, bourgeoisie standards.

So what happens when you’re a standard, able-bodied, middle-class, white (most likely straight or vaguely bisexual) person? You have no place to go, no way to be special…So you come up with weird shit. ((Or maybe people have completely legitimate reasons for this nonsense))

Soooo, bisexual like myself people don’t exist?  I guess me and my partner kaylacheri (who is genderqueer, btw) are just playing along and doing it to feel more included.

Oh.  We’re also getting married this July.  But nope. It’s just all pretend-like.

Now, I feel you when you say that internet SJ has its problems. It really does.  And you’re right about people wanting to be unique and feel special.  That’s human nature.  But you are tackling this from the completely wrong direction.  Yes, sometimes it’s hard to help a group when you aren’t part of it. And sometimes that group will go as far as not wanting to accept your help.  But that isn’t your battle to fight.  Does that mean you have to stop advocating?  Not at all.  You can be an advocate by speaking up when you hear a racist/sexist/homophobic/ableist joke.  Or try to break down stereotypes that you or people close to you hold.  There are avenues for advocacy that everyone can participate in, regardless if you are a member of that group.

Fuck this. Cat blogs, here I come!

I hate what a fucking echo-chamber this place is. Hardly anyone is willing to even listen, much less actually consider opinions other than their own. I think I have found a total of ONE person that I have had a decent set of private messages with. but other than that ONE individual, no one on here is willing to check their EGO. Assumptions are clearly something substantial to base an argument on and are clearly the best way to judge a persons character and opinions. Luckily I know people who are willing to have an actual discussion even if we don’t agree, will listen respectfully as I give them the same courtesy, and we might be able to make a change for the better in ourselves. This is something Tumblr has no hope of. I will continue being an advocate and activist in my community, and Tumblr can have its little box. The only reason I stay is for the cats. /rant

Black and white photos of homeless people

prolongedeyecontact:

Number one rule as a photography major: don’t take fucking pictures of homeless people. These are gorgeous, but unless he’s doing activism for homeless people or donating a portion of his profits I have a huge problem with this. Not all photographers agree with me, of course, but I cannot get behind photojournalists who walk in, take pictures, leave, get famous, and never look back (Edward Burtynsky and Steve McCurry I’m looking at you). In my opinion, if you’re going to make a living being a voyeur you need to educate your viewers. If you’re not actively doing anything to help your subjects then I just have zero respect for you. The reason someone like Sebastiao Salgado is so obscure and lacking in funds compared to someone like Burtynsky is because when he talks about his work he talks as a humanitarian and an educator, not as a photographer. That’s something I greatly admire about him.

This is exploitative in a similar way to white people selling indigenous artwork for a massive profit (especially where the artist get like a fucking fraction of that). Have you see Samson & Delilah? It’s an excellent Australian film that sort of tackles this subject.

Here is the link to the excerpt below of the photographer answering the question, “In what kinds of situations were most of these photographs taken?” I don’t know the photographers income situation in regards to these photos, but at the very least the weren’t “stolen” as the photographer puts it. I do however agree, if he is making any money off these, I certainly hope he has the decency to donate some if not the majority of his profits.

“My involvement with the homeless started after an encounter with a young girl in London. She was huddled under a sleeping bag in a doorway in Leicester Square and took offense as I stole a photo from a distance. I was tempted to turn around and leave but something prompted me to go talk to her instead. Her story broke my heart, and changed the way I perceived the homeless. Most of my images are of people I have met on the street, whether in the UK, Europe or the US. The situations presented themselves, and I’ve made an effort to get to know each of the subjects before asking their permission to take their portrait.”

I’m very tired of hearing that women only make 77 cents on the male’s dollar. It’s not a correct statistic. It should read: White women only make 77 cents on the white man’s dollar.

That’s the real statistic.

Not all women are white. WOMEN don’t make 77 cents on the dollar, WHITE WOMEN do.

It’s important to remember.

Because every time we repeat that 77 number with no mention of race, we are erasing all women who are not white.

Black women make 69 cents on the white man’s dollar.

Hispanic women make 59 cents on the white man’s dollar.

Those women matter. Those women are women.

Women who should be included in feminism, who should be included in our movement.

So don’t erase them.

Oh fuck, is this shit going around again??

Those women matter. Those women are women.

Women who should be included in feminism, who should be included in our movement.

So don’t erase them.

Oh wow, thank you white teenage feminist for recognizing that women of color are in fact totally women too and like, totally deserve to be part of your movement. How kind! How magnanimous!

Really? Fucking really? People are still reblogging this racist ass post without criticism? People don’t see the fucking problem here?

Fucking! White People!

I don’t think people realize that when you have to say “These women are women too” you are not being very inclusive. We know they’re women, at least in the real world, not the magical land of suburbia. So include those fucking statistics and don’t point out that these are real women too, it’s fucking condescending and just reeks of a cracker upbringing.

You want to be racially inclusive? Just include them, don’t shill your lame eurocentric bullshit about how you just discovered that people of color existed last Thursday.

Reblogging for additional commentary.

I am not understanding this commentary. Would someone be willing to explain, because I am not seeing clearly what the point is being made. I’m sensing a lot of anger and I’d like to better understand where it is coming from, if anyone is willing to help.
